Judges aren't fooled
Paul Manafort was previously convicted of bank and taxation fraud. Now he's guilty of another scam, which I call the Dennis Hastert gambit (named after the disgraced Illinois Representative from the 14th congressional district). One day you're dancing into court, joking with reporters and politicians, but then you're convicted of your crimes. Come the day of sentencing, you make your court appearance in a wheelchair, looking like (perhaps acting like) you just suffered a stroke. News to Dennis and Paul: The judges aren't buying it.
