Softball: Hiller hurls 4-hitter for Fremd
Fremd sophomore Grace Hiller threw a 4-hitter with 6 strikeouts as the Vikings' softball team posted a 6-2 win at South Elgin on Tuesday.
Kayln McCarthy (2-for-3, 2 runs), Sophia Crescio (2 RBI) and Reagan Goluch (2-for-3) led the offense for Fremd (1-1).
Hersey 16, Zion-Benton 4 (6 innings): Senior Brianna Luciano went 5-for-5 at the plate with 3 doubles and threw a 7-hitter with 10 strikeouts for Hersey (1-0), which advanced to Wednesday's semifinals of the Barrington Spring Fling to meet Warren at 4:45 p.m.
Sarah Bailitz and Makayla Tsagalis each went 4-for-5 for the Huskies while Chloe Gordon, Natalia Kubsic and Antoinette Napoli (2 doubles) each had 2 of Hersey's 22 hits.
St. Viator 12, Prospect 6: St. Viator sophomore Gianna Saverino won her second game at Melas Park in Mt. Prospect. Each team had 16 hits and a pair of 3-run innings.
"This game really showed that hitting is contagious," said Lions coach John Scotillo. "It seemed that each team would answer back after a big inning, no lead was safe."
Saverino collected 3 hits and 3 RBI.
Other top hitters for Viator (2-3) were Morgan Bielfleldt (4-for-4), freshman Allison Ardito (3 RBI, 2 hits) and Morgan Joyce, who collected her first two varsity hits. Marissa Zanon and Cece Kaiser each added a pair of hits and an RBI.
Marengo 19, Palatine 12: Emily Parrott (4-for-4, 2 doubles, 2 RBI), Amanda Stanczuk (2-for-3, home run, double, 5 RBI), Kelly Beach (1-for-1, home run, 3 RBI), Kayla Courtney (2-for-3, double) and Kaitlyn Reed (double) led host Palatine (0-1) in its season opener. Pirates pitcher Rhiann Dick struck out three.
