City in southwestern Indiana pushes for renewable energy use

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (AP) - A City Council in southwestern Indiana says it wants to shift to 100 percent renewable energy for city government operations by 2050.

The Evansville Courier & Press reports the non-binding resolution for Evansville that acknowledges an accelerating rate of climate change was adopted on Monday.

The resolution is a pledge to reduce the city's carbon footprint and increase residents' health and wellbeing. It also urges Evansville to provide more green infrastructure such as urban tree canopies and electric vehicle charging stations.

Councilman Dan McGinn co-authored the resolution. He says it "encourages the city and shows that we care about our children and grandchildren."

Councilman John Hayden voted against it, calling it a "great idea" but noting that it includes some "very definitive statements" that he doesn't think they can make.
