Wauconda wins season opener

Senior Olivia Kuch scored the game's only goal, freshman Mackenzie Arden earned the shutout in goal, and Wauconda's girls soccer team defeated visiting Crystal Lake Central 1-0 in its season opener Monday.

It was 50th win for Bulldogs fourth-year coach Beau Shogren.

"This is about what you expect from the first game of the season," Shogren said. "It was a really difficult clash between two physical teams. Crystal Lake Central really had us scrambling defensively in a few moments, and we missed some pretty good opportunities to score multiple goals. However, we have to be happy with the result."

Arden made 5 saves.

"(She) was awesome today," Shogren said. "She surpassed our expectations and rose to the occasion."

Kuch scored early in the second half, assisted by freshman Belle Johnson on a cross from the right side. Kuch made a long run to the far post and slotted the ball into the net.

"We have lots to improve on, but this was a result we have to like," Shogren said.
