District 212 students earn honors at Triton College High School Art Competition

This year Leyden was one of five area high schools that participated in the contest. Leyden artists accounted for 71 pieces of the approximately 140 pieces on display at the exhibit - about half of the entries.

Works of art are submitted in seven different categories that include drawing, painting, photography, mixed media, design, sculpture and ceramics. Leyden artists won six of the seven best in category awards; and one student won Best in Show. In addition, Leyden students won 15 first place blue ribbons, 20 second place red ribbons and 36 third place yellow ribbons.

The following students were honored for their creativity and skill in six different categories. Alexis Roy dominated Best of Show with her intricate sculpture of Styrofoam cups, appropriately titled, Cups. Gregory Greco captured Best of Design with his digital photograph Road Kill. Mauricio Hernandez won Best of Drawing for his pointillist ink drawing of a female astronaut titled Rise Up. Lilly Olesky earned Best of Painting for her painting The Scream, a modern depiction of the famous Edvard Munch painting of the same name. Julia Gryc took Best of Photography with her serene photo Hammock. Gloria Goray-Regalado won Best of Mixed Media with See Me in a Crown, a layered collage with a charcoal portrait.

A reception and awards ceremony for the artists was held on February 13 at the Triton College Art Gallery, located on the college campus in River Grove.
