Endorsements: White Eagle, George, Becker for Campton Hills village board

It's been a decent 12 years for Campton Hills, which has gone from a fledgling village wet behind the ears in a contentious battle to incorporate to a community facing suburban challenges.

The village has hired and fired its first village administrator, seen its first police chief retire, unsuccessfully fought a residential drug treatment center and is considering video gambling.

Village officials are planning for the future to preserve the town's rural feel and in this election, voters will have a choice of trustee candidates who are tuned to these and other issues.

Incumbents Wendy White Eagle and Susan George are joined by newcomers Darlene Bakk and Rich Becker in the race. Three will be elected.

Becker seems especially energetic. He's lived in the village four years and is running because he likes to get involved. He promises more accessibility to elected officials and increased transparency. He favors video gaming and said he wants to educate residents who have concerns.

White Eagle said the state of the village is strong, and leaders have a "can do, can teach" approach to managing local affairs. She leans toward favoring video gaming and said results from a nonbinding referendum could weigh heavily in her decision for full support.

George, first elected in 2008, said serving is her passion. She considers herself a visionary leader who can adapt to any situation. She's especially proud of the village's healthy budget and fully funded pension system.

Bakk said she probably wouldn't patronize a business with video gaming but is prepared to listen on the subject.

We find White Eagle, George and Becker the best prepared to lead Campton Hills as its government matures, and they get our endorsement.
