We need the facts about impact of tax cuts

Given your newspaper's commitment to "facts matter," your lack of coverage of the negative consequences of the GOP tax law that are now becoming painful "facts" to the people in our area is disheartening. Over the past year and a half, when many credible sources indicated that the previous GOP Congress was cynically delaying the true impact of their deception until after the November 2018 election, you chose not to give the story much air. Now that the time bombs that they planted are starting to explode, I hope that you agree that your readers deserve some facts.

Here are just a few:

1) This year, due to the cap on SALT and elimination of other itemized deductions, many taxpayers in our area are at an increased risk of paying more in federal taxes, according to H&R Block.

2) 2019 homes prices in the Chicago suburban area are now projected to fall to 100th place in the U.S. according to Realtor.com.

3) The U.S. Treasury will need to sell an additional $1 trillion in debt this year to cover budget shortfalls, a record high for a relatively economically stable period, according to The Wall Street Journal.

These and other distasteful new realities that will now adversely affect the lives of the people of our area might have been avoided had your newspaper questioned dubious GOP talking points in the past.

So, please, when Republicans tell you that their tax cuts are "paying for themselves," know that it's not true. In fact, big GOP donors got paid and the rest of us got stuck with the bill.
