What's changed?

In 1980 Ronald Reagan ran on a platform to Make America Great Again and won. I do not recall any revolt about this platform from anybody back then, even from diehard Democrats. So, it's been 39 years since then, has the country and people's views changed so much, I doubt it. It must be something else.
