TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (AP) - Authorities say a man or woman is believed to be missing in the Wabash River in western Indiana.

Crews searched unsuccessfully Wednesday and Thursday for the person whom witnesses reported seeking enter the frigid waters of the river near Fairbanks Park in Terre Haute.

Indiana conservation officers at first believed the person was a woman, but say new information received Thursday suggested the person was possibly a male.

Karanam Rao told the Tribune-Star he was sitting in his van when he saw the person stop near the water, take off a jacket and jump in. Rao said the person appeared to be swimming just fine and then "drifted along" in the river. Two other people also reported seeing the person swimming.

Officers say the search will resume Friday.
