No street referendum in Hawthorn Woods

Plans to ask Hawthorn Woods residents to consider a property tax levy to address aging municipal streets and deteriorating culverts have been postponed due to a legal technicality involving an error.

The error prevented a planned referendum question from qualifying for the April 2 ballot.

Village leaders say they will meet with constituents to discuss the condition of the village's infrastructure and the possible financial remedies in light of an engineering study that found 90 percent of streets need urgent resurfacing or reconstruction. Village officials will have the option of adding the referendum question to the March 2020 ballot.
