Authorities identify man who was fatally shot by Waukegan police

Authorities have released the identity of the 35-year-old Waukegan man who was fatally shot Sunday by Waukegan police after, authorities said, he tried to hit an officer with a car.

Lake County Coroner Howard Cooper said his office concluded Asuncion J. Gomez-Guerrero died from multiple gunshots. He said a toxicology test is pending.

Police were called to the 3500 block of Windhaven Drive about 2:30 p.m. Sunday. Responding officers found a vehicle in front of the house, with Gomez-Guerrero and an 18-year-old female passenger in the front seat.

When the officer approached, Gomez-Guerrero disobeyed orders to stop and attempted to hit the officer with the vehicle, authorities said.

The officer - later identified as a 20-year-veteran of the police force - fired his weapon at the vehicle and struck Gomez-Guerrero, who later died at the hospital.

The vehicle crashed into a telephone pole about one block away. The passenger was taken to the hospital with minor injuries from the crash.

Cooper said the investigation into Gomez-Guerrero's death is ongoing by his office and the Illinois State Police.

"We have been in close contact with Mr. Gomez-Guerrero's family and our deepest condolences go out to them during this difficult time," Cooper said.

Waukegan police said they could not comment because of the ongoing investigation.
