Former Liverpool player appointed coach of Swiss club Xamax

NEUCHATEL, Switzerland (AP) - Former Liverpool defender Stephane Henchoz has been appointed coach of Neuchatel Xamax aiming to keep the struggling team in the Swiss top tier.

Xamax said on its website Henchoz steps up from being assistant to Michel Decastel, who was fired on Tuesday.

Henchoz was given the job for his winning spirit and ability to motivate players, the club said.

Xamax is last in the 10-team division on its return to the top tier seven years after disbanding midseason into bankruptcy.

Henchoz was a key member of the Liverpool team which won five trophies in 2001, including the UEFA Cup and FA Cup. He also played for Switzerland at two European Championships.
