Historian discusses 'Team of Rivals' at Elmhurst College

Doris Kearns Goodwin has spent the past five decades studying American presidents, masterfully bringing the force and vitality of their history into our times.

The Pulitzer Prize-winning author and presidential historian will present "Team of Rivals: Leadership Lessons from Abraham Lincoln" at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 7, as this year's Rudolf G. Schade Lecture at Elmhurst College.

The Los Angeles Times described Goodwin's 2005 book "Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln" as "the most richly detailed account of the Civil War presidency to appear in many years."

It received the prestigious Lincoln Prize, the inaugural Book Prize for American History, and the Lincoln Leadership Prize. The book also served as the basis for Steven Spielberg's 2012 film "Lincoln," which was nominated for 12 Academy Awards.

Goodwin's most recent book, "Leadership in Turbulent Times," about presidents Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, Franklin Roosevelt and Lyndon Baines Johnson, has received critical acclaim and became an instant New York Times best-seller.

"Team of Rivals" will be presented in Hammerschmidt Memorial Chapel, 190 Prospect Ave. Admission is $10 for the general public and free for Elmhurst College students, faculty, staff and alumni.

Tickets are available by visiting elmhurst.edu/cultural. For details, call (630) 617-5186.
