Smoke alarms alert family to Lombard house fire

Working smoke detectors alerted a Lombard family to a fire that broke out in a house on the 900 block of East Washington Boulevard shortly after midnight Friday, authorities said.

A father and his twin sons were home at the time of the fire and heard the smoke alarms. The family was able to find the fire in the home's family room, call 911 and safely evacuate on their own.

Firefighters were called about 12:16 a.m. and quickly contained the blaze to the room of origin. There were no injuries to residents or firefighters.

"This is a prime example of why we remind residents to ensure that their smoke alarms are in working order," Deputy Chief Ray Kickert said in a statement. "Smoke alarms should be on every floor of a home and batteries should be tested or replaced every six months."

Damage to the home and contents is estimated to be less than $10,000. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Lombard firefighters were assisted at the scene by the Addison and York Center fire protection districts as well as the Elmhurst and Villa Park fire departments.
