Police: Man fatally struck trying to help stranded daughter

JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. (AP) - Authorities say a 73-year-old man was fatally struck by a car while trying to cross an interstate in southern Indiana to help his daughter whose vehicle had run out of gas.

Indiana State Police say troopers were stopped along northbound Interstate 65 in Clark County about 4 a.m. Friday, including two waiting for a vehicle to be towed and one nearby helping the stranded motorist, who had contacted her father.

Police say Earl L. Gresham of New Albany stopped his vehicle nearby along the southbound lanes, got out and tried to cross all six lanes of traffic to get to where the pair of troopers was stopped. He crossed the southbound lanes and climbed over the median barrier, but was hit crossing the northbound lanes.

The crash is under investigation.
