Hazel Head, mother of Pat Summitt, dies at 93

HENRIETTA, Tenn. (AP) - Hazel Head, the mother of former longtime Tennessee women's basketball coach Pat Summitt, has died. She was 93.

Casey Davis, Head's granddaughter, said Head died Wednesday at Davis' home outside Henrietta, Tennessee.

Head had five children, nine grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.

Summitt coached Tennessee to eight national titles and posted a 1,098-208 record from 1974-2012 while building the Lady Volunteers into one of the biggest brands in women's athletics. Summitt also started a foundation in her name to fight Alzheimer's disease and raised millions of dollars toward that cause before dying in June 2016 at the age of 64.

The Pat Summitt Foundation issued a statement saying that "Mrs. Head was a strong, kind-hearted woman of faith who leaves behind a legacy of love and caring for others, qualities which were reflected throughout the life of Pat Summitt. Our thoughts and prayers are with the entire Head family."

One of Head's other children was former Tennessee state Rep. Tommy Head.
