Local cantor performs operettas silenced by the Third Reich

At 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, at Temple Chai, 1670 Checker Road, in Long Grove, Cantor Scott Simon and the Chicago Folks Operetta will present "Operetta in Exile: The Music Silenced by the Third Reich."

In this poignant concert program, the widely acclaimed Folks Operetta and Cantor Simon will examine the operetta composers and librettists who were forced into exile, persecuted or perished during the rise of Nazi Germany.

The cantor and the Folks Operetta will perform the songs of these artists who represented the elite of the European theater during much of the early 20th century.

The Folks Operetta performers, with their soaring voices and artistry, have ascended to the forefront of the Chicago musical theater scene because they invest themselves deeply in the style and substance of the composers and librettists whose works they perform.

In this multimedia concert with flowing translation and images, backed by an ensemble of piano and quintet, the Folks Operetta and Cantor Simon will lift the veil of silence from these voices that were once an important part of a vibrant musical community.

Tickets for this concert are available at the Temple Chai office or at www.operettainexile.brownpapertickets.com. General admission is $25; $18 for seniors and students.
