Four Oscar nominees who grew up in the suburbs, Rockford

Oscar nominations announced Tuesday included a mix of expected and surprising names. Among them were four nominees with local ties:

• John Walker - The producer from Elgin received a nod for best animated feature for the Disney-Pixar sequel "Incredibles 2."

• Melissa McCarthy - The Plainfield native is up for best actress for her role as writer-turned-forger Lee Israel in "Can You Ever Forgive Me?"

• Bing Liu - The filmmaker drew on 12 years of footage involving skateboarder friends in his hometown of Rockford for "Minding the Gap," up for best documentary.

• Dede Gardner - The producer from Winnetka - the first female producer to win two Academy Awards for best picture - is up for best picture again for "Vice."
