Elk Grove Village Celebrates Completion of New James Paul Petri Public Works Facility
Elk Grove Village held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the completion of the new James Paul Petri Public Works Facility at 450 E. Devon Avenue on Saturday, January 12, 2019.
The former Public Works Facility located at 600 Landmeier was originally built in 1960 and served the Village in numerous capacities over the years, including as Village Hall, a Police Station and as a Fire Station. The former facility was 43,833 square foot in size and was built on a 3.78 acre parcel was undersized for use by a modern Public Works Department.
The new James Paul Petri Public Works Facility at 450 E. Devon Avenue offers a total of 84,854 square feet of space consisting of offices, locker rooms, utility and infrastructure shops, garage space for 82 vehicles/trailers and 63 pieces of equipment, wash bay, training room and more. The 9.8 acre site allowed the Village to design the new facility to meet the needs of modern Public Works Department. The new facility will also optimizes operations through efficient design that includes the addition of an on-site salt barn, easy access to all equipment, motion sensor controlled lights and a smart water station.
"The completion of the new Public Works Facility is a major milestone in Elk Grove 2025. Public Works provides so many vital services to the community, and this facility will ensure efficient and effective operations in the years to come." said Elk Grove Village Mayor Craig Johnson.
Site work on the James P. Petri Public Works Facility at 450 E. Devon began in the fall of 2017 as part of the Elk Grove 2025 Long-Range Infrastructure Plan. Elk Grove 2025 includes unprecedented investment in infrastructure-including major construction on four facilities, road reconstruction and resurfacing, streetscaping enhancements, street lighting, drainage projects, and bicycle and pedestrian improvements. This ambitious plan calls for an investment of over $135 million into the community.
The new Public Works Facility is named after Village Trustee James (Jim) Petri. Trustee Petri was elected as a Village Trustee in 1979. He is the longest serving elected official in the history of the Village of Elk Grove, having served nearly 42 consecutive years. Over the years, Petri has been instrumental in the development of Public Works Department through his work as Co-Chair of the Industrial / Commercial Revitalization Commission (ICRC) and Chair of the Capital Improvements Committee.
When asked about the new Public Works Facility, Trustee Petri noted, "The building will serve the community well for generations into the future, and I'm proud to have been associated with its construction and deeply honored to have it named after me."
