Park City man facing multiple charges after high-speed crash in Green Oaks

A Park City man accused of fleeing from police after a high-speed crash Monday in Green Oaks now is facing multiple charges, officials said.

Gilberto Cuen-Alvarado, 26, of the 3400 block of Ted Avenue, is charged with driving under the influence of drugs, leaving the scene of an accident, speeding, operating an uninsured vehicle and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, authorities said.

He was taken to Highland Park Hospital with inuries that do not appear to be life-threatening, according to the Lake County sheriff's office, and he was still there Tuesday. He is due to appear in court Feb. 27.

According to the sheriff's office, a deputy was looking for speeders near West Guerin Road and O'Plaine Road in Green Oaks about 9:05 p.m. when the deputy spotted a vehicle traveling east on Guerin at 80 mph in the 30 mph zone.

Before the deputy was able to stop the vehicle, the driver turned north and crashed into a tree on the 31000 block of O'Plaine, the sheriff's office reported. When the deputy arrived at the scene, he found that everyone in the vehicle had fled, authorities said.

Deputies established a perimeter around the scene and requested help from the Waukegan Police Department Canine Team, authorities said. The police dog and the deputy tracked down Cuen-Alvarado and a 24-year-old passenger in a subdivision east of the crash scene after they ran through a swamp to escape, authorities said. The passenger, a 24-year-old man from Park City, did not require medical attention.

A second passenger was picked up later by state police near Route 137 and North Reigate Lane in Green Oaks, authorities said. That man, a 24-year-old man from Waukegan, was taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville with injuries that were not life-threatening, authorities said.

The identities of the passengers have not been released because they are not charged with a crime. However, the crash remains under investigation and additional charges are possible, according to the sheriff's office.
