Mold remediation will force 1,100 IU students off campus

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) - Indiana University officials say more than 1,000 upperclassmen will be forced to live off campus next school year due to renovation work to prevent recent mold problems from returning to two residence halls.

Those projects will make more than 2,000 beds unavailable at the Foster and McNutt residence halls, where mold was a problem last fall.

Although that mold was removed, school officials moved the renovation work up by two years because the buildings' old mechanical systems would likely have allowed mold to return.

The Herald-Times reports that IU has enough space in other residence halls for next school year's freshman class, but some upperclassmen will have to live off campus.

IU spokesman Chuck Carney says the school has contracted with three off-campus apartment complexes to house the affected upperclassmen.
