Aurora police: 'Belligerent' Plano man resisted officers after DUI stop

A 31-year-old Plano man with a violent history faces felony charges of resisting arrest and aggravated assault to a police officer after a traffic stop in Aurora early Monday morning.

Tyler J. Morris, of the 400 block of East Main Street, also was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and cited for failure to signal after the traffic stop at 12:15 a.m. on the 700 block of East New York Street on the city's east side, according to police and Kane County court records.

According to police, Morris stopped his vehicle in a parking lot, got out and "immediately became argumentative and belligerent."

When an officer tried to handcuff Morris because he was upset and uncooperative, he resisted until another officer arrived and they both arrested him, police said, adding Morris continued to threaten officers throughout the arrest and booking process.

One officer had some minor scrapes but did not require medical attention, police said.

Morris has been sent to prison and jailed for violent offenses, records show.

According to Kane County court records, Aurora police arrested Morris in January 2012 on felony charges of mob action and aggravated battery in a public place. He pleaded guilty two months later and was sentenced to two years in prison.

Morris was arrested by Kane County sheriff's deputies in July 2015 on felony charges of possession of a controlled substance. He pleaded guilty in January 2017 and was sentenced to 12 months in jail, of which he served half under state law.

In September 2017, he was arrested on domestic battery charges and later pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of battery after spending 37 days in jail. He was ordered to complete domestic violence counseling as part of his probation, which ended in September 2018, records show.

Morris is held at the Kane County jail on $25,000 bail, meaning he must post $2,500 to be released while the case is pending. If convicted of the most severe charge, he faces a punishment of ranging from probation to up to three years in prison.
