Gail Borden concert series continues Jan. 6 with Metropolis Oboe Quartet

Gail Borden Public Library continues its Sunday Afternoon Concert Series with the Metropolis Oboe Quartet from 2 to 3 p.m. Jan. 6 at the main library, 270 N. Grove Ave. in downtown Elgin.

The quartet invites you to join them on an exciting journey through the greatest chamber music of all eras. Aficionados and newcomers alike will enjoy this memorable display of high-caliber music complemented by the ensemble's energy and love for what they do.

For nearly a decade, this talented group of musicians (Deb Stevenson, oboe and English horn; Thomas Yang, violin; Rose Armbrust Griffin, viola; and Steven Houser, cello) has been treating the Chicago area to performances of both famous masterpieces and lesser-known gems.

The one-hour concert will be held in the Meadows Community Rooms.

Meet the artists and enjoy refreshments after the concert.

Free tickets are available at the main library, Rakow Branch and South Elgin Branch three weeks prior to each concert.

On Feb. 17, acclaimed pianists Svetlana Belsky and Elena Doubovitskaya will perform "Tales from the East" on two pianos, featuring stories of romance, magic and adventure by Russian composers. It will feature music by Borodin, Rimsky-Korsakoff, Prokofiev and Stravinsky.

On March 10, the featured performers will be the Lyrebird Ensemble, an innovative flute and harp duo based in Chicago. Their performances are the perfect combination of exciting virtuosity and refined elegance, offering audiences a wide variety of styles within the beautiful sounds of these instruments.

On April 14, Millikin University's School of Music will present the 2019 Hollis Prize Winner's Recital at Gail Borden Public Library. The competition is made possible through the generosity of Dr. Kimm Hollis, Millikin alumnus and professor of music and artist in-residence emeritus at Hanover College in Indiana. Stay tuned for the winner!
