'Tarzan' musical swings on Magical Starlight stage

Tickets are on sale for Magical Starlight Theatre's January production of "Tarzan: The Stage Musical."

Performances will be held Jan. 11-13 and 18-20 in the Naperville Central High School auditorium, 440 Aurora Ave.

Show times are 7:30 p.m. Fridays, 1:30 and 6:30 p.m. Saturdays, and 1:30 p.m. Sundays.

Based on the Disney movie, "Tarzan the Stage Musical" tells a story of adventure, family and love, featuring music and lyrics by Phil Collins. The show features creative costumes, lively dance numbers and stage acrobatics.

"It's fun that we get to do a musical that is not often performed by community theater groups," said Kristin Irvin, who plays Jane in the production.

"'Tarzan, the Stage Musical' for us is a story of discovery," Director Kris Visher said. "Our cast members are discovering how to tell the story beyond the words on the scripted page.

"We are discovering how to draw our audience into Tarzan's heart of discovering who his family is and where he belongs. We are uplifted by family; we are accepted for who we are. The production is full of spectacle and fun and the unexpected.

"We encourage people to take time to discover this 'new world' on the coast of West Africa with all of the adventure that goes along with that."

The cast of 43 community actors includes children from grade four and up and adults of all ages. The emphasis on family runs through the culture at Magical Starlight Theatre, where entire families work together, both on stage and behind the scenes, to produce quality theater for the Naperville community and beyond.

Tickets for the show may be purchased in advance for $12 until 4 p.m. on the Friday of the performance weekend. Advance tickets may be purchased online at www.napervilleparks.org, by phone at (630) 848-5000, or during regular business hours at the Alfred Rubin Riverwalk Community Center at 305 W. Jackson Ave., at the 95th St. Center at 2244 W. 95th St., or at Fort Hill Activity Center, at 20 Fort Hill Drive. Tickets also may be purchased at the door for $15.

A sign language interpreter will be present at the 1:30 p.m. performance on Sunday, Jan. 13, and at the 6:30 p.m. performance on Saturday, Jan. 19.

Magical Starlight Theatre is a program of The Naperville Park District and the program is partially supported by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council Agency.
