Pensions are earned
In response to Mr. Kraus' letter of Tuesday, Dec. 11, I would like to answer his question: Why should anyone be forced to pay for a teacher's pension?
What teachers do is the most important job in he world after parenting. Without teachers, our country wouldn't have literate functioning adults. We wouldn't be able to balance a checkbook, create art or make reasoned decisions on who to vote for. Additionally, according to the May 9, 2018, edition of Forbes, Illinois ranks 10th in teacher salaries, not first. If you want an educated civilization, you have to have teachers, and you should pay them what they're worth.
After 37 years of 8- to 14-hour days and summers filled with additional classes for myself and my students, I believe I've earned my pension.
