Waukegan man killed in hit-and-run crash Saturday identified

The Lake County coroner late Monday identified a 63-year-old pedestrian struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver Saturday night northeast of Gurnee.

Coroner Howard Cooper said an autopsy was performed Monday on Robert Barron of Waukegan and preliminary results indicated he died from blunt force trauma. Toxicology is pending and the investigation continues, Cooper said.

Police called to the scene about 6:45 p.m. Saturday found the man in the front yard of a residence on the 12400 block of West Crescent Avenue, near Northern Avenue in Waukegan Township. Barron was taken to Vista East Medical Center in Waukegan, where he was pronounced dead, Lake County sheriff's police said.

The sheriff's office said Saturday the man was hit by a vehicle as he was walking on Crescent Avenue, and the driver of the vehicle then fled the scene.

Crash investigators collected evidence and were speaking with nearby homeowners to determine if they witnessed the fatal crash. Anyone with information about the crash is encouraged to call the Lake County sheriff's office at (847) 549-5200 or Lake County Crime Stoppers at (847) 662-2222.
