Help brighten the holidays for six local families in need

Batavia High School and Aurora University graduate Jackie Rakers is about to make the holidays extra special for six families in Batavia.

For the second year in a row, she is working alongside CHIP IN Batavia to bring local families in need a live Christmas tree, stand, ornaments, lights, topper, tree skirt, and gifts for each family member.

This year, several community organizations and individuals have also gotten involved in the project. Boy Scout Troop 12 is donating six live Christmas trees from troop's lot on Route 25.

The residents at Lifespring Center in Aurora have created handmade ornaments to adorn each tree. Jackie's mom, Chris Rakers, owner of the glass company Christalyn Cole, has been selling her handmade glass Santa ornaments for $5 each, with all proceeds benefiting her daughter's project.

BEI Properties, West DuPage Cabinets and Granite, Bulldog Plumbing, ALDI, Boyce Body Werks, the Marmion Academy Swim Team, Cynthia Rendel and many individuals have donated funds, time, and talent for the project.

"There's still work to be done, but I couldn't be happier with how things are coming together," said Miss Rakers. "What a great little town we have."

Rakers will continue to take donations until she delivers her holiday magic Friday, Dec. 7. Donations can be dropped off or mailed to CHIP IN Batavia. Visit www.chipinbatavia.org or www.facebook.com/chipinbatavia/.

"Last year, out of the blue, Jackie called CHIP IN and wanted to know if she could help Batavia families in need during the holidays," said Joanne Spitz, co-founder of CHIP IN Batavia. "She did everything to make it happen and she's doing it again this year. She is wonderful!"
