Relative: Pilot was fixing plane before fatal Indiana crash

MARION, Ind. (AP) - A relative of a man who died in a small plane crash in northeastern Indiana says the aircraft had been having engine issues that were being repaired before it went down.

Gage Barrett tells WISH-TV that his 60-year-old grandfather Jeffrey Barrett of Marion had been fixing the twin-engine plane and took it up for a test flight on Thursday afternoon. The plane crashed near the Marion Municipal Airport south of the city. Gage Barrett says the plane also may have had a fuel gauge issue.

Grant County Coroner Chris Butcher tells the Chronicle-Tribune the pilot likely died due to burns.

The Federal Aviation Administration said the agency was investigating along with the National Transportation Safety Board.

It's the second fatal plane crash at or near the airport this year.
