Ancient Bethlehem Marketplace returns to Palatine church
First United Methodist Church in Palatine will host its long-running Bethlehem Marketplace Saturday, Dec. 1.
Celebrating its 30th year, the church at 123 N. Plum Grove Road will be transformed into an ancient market from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Adding to the authenticity will be a live Nativity scene.
First United Methodist members and supporters will wear costumes and play roles as merchants, craftsmen, soldiers, beggars and tax collectors to take visitors back to the first Christmas in Bethlehem.
Hungry guests can visit the market's Rachel's Inn for food and snacks of the period. Favorites include homemade lentil soup, personal loaves of unleavened bread, grape juice, fresh fruit, dried fruit, cheese cubes, dried meat, freshly made hummus, pita chips and assorted sweets.
Visitors may buy "Roman" coins at the entrance to spend at each stall for materials and instructions to make crafts featured at the event. A $9 bag of coins will be sold for half price before 11 a.m.
About 160 church members will volunteer to work Bethlehem Marketplace, which attracts visitors from across the suburbs. Organizers expect at least 400 patrons.
