Huber, Glenbard East beat the buzzer, Elgin

Glenbard East's Lauren Huber made sure to put her mark on the basketball following Tuesday's home game against Elgin.

Huber also put her mark on the final score.

The sophomore guard buried an 8-foot baseline jumper with less than two seconds left to lift the Rams to a thrilling 34-33 comeback win over the Maroons in Upstate Eight Conference play.

Huber said it was her first winning basket. After the game Huber put a small mark on the basketball at the scorer's table.

"I was asked to mark the lucky ball for future home games," Huber said, laughing.

Huber also made two 3-pointers to finish with 10 points. Sophomore forward Emily Ryan led the Rams with 11 points. Kamiya Harvey tallied a game-high 15 points for the Maroons.

The Rams led nearly the entire game until the Maroons seized advantage of a cold spell by the hosts in the fourth quarter. Glenbard East made just one of its first 10 fourth-quarter shots, allowing Elgin to seize a 31-27 lead following a putback basket by Dajha Cooper, who had 7 points and 4 blocked shots.

The Rams (2-3, 1-0) rallied behind their defense, forcing six straight turnovers. With Elgin leading 33-32, the Rams moved the ball around on their final possession. Sophomore guard Brooke Hernandez, in the far corner away from Glenbard East's bench, saw Huber wide open near the basket. Huber briefly hesitated then nailed the winning basket.

"It was hectic, but I knew if I got the ball to be aware of who was open and who wasn't," Hernandez said. "Luckily, I saw Lauren and able to feed her the bounce pass and she made it. This is a big deal. This is one of our first games of the year, so we were lucky to win this."

Huber downplayed her winning shot, crediting her teammates for the comeback.

"I knew I had to get it up and shoot it," she said. "Our spacing on that play was a little off after the outlet pass. I kind of cut and rolled and Brooke read the screen and passed it to me. I missed a lot of earlier shots, so this was a team effort to win it. It's a big win."

The Rams mounted their fourth-quarter comeback following a 3-pointer by Huber, then baskets by Lisa Stranski and Ryan.

"It was a tough game, a battle for both teams," Glenbard East coach Nicole Miller said. "We didn't execute early in the game, but we found a way to win. We were able to make something happen and found the open player. It's nice to get our first conference win for this group."
