Man sentenced for killing woman in apartment complex's gym

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - A man who admitted fatally stabbing a woman in a downtown Indianapolis apartment complex's gym has been sentenced to 45 years in prison.

Twenty-six-year-old Cody Weir of Avon was sentenced Tuesday in Carina Rodriguez's killing after pleading guilty to murder.

A Marion County judge sentenced him to 55 years, but suspended five years and ordered Weir to spend five years on community corrections.

Rodriguez was found dead in October 2017 in the gym at the 9 on Canal apartment complex, where the 23-year-old had been exercising.

Surveillance video showed that Weir left his car, walked to the gym and knocked on its door, prompting Rodriguez to let him in.

When Rodriguez resumed working out, prosecutors said Weir stabbed her in the neck from behind, cutting an artery and her esophagus.
