Ex-IU student faces extradition in mother's stabbing death

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) - A former Indiana University student is awaiting extradition to California, where he's charged in his mother's fatal stabbing.

Twenty-six-year-old Levente Laszlo Lazar is being held at the Monroe County Jail as he awaits extradition.

The Herald-Times reports that Lazar is charged with murder in San Luis Obispo County, California. Investigators say he fatally stabbed his mother, 64-year-old Athena Valentiny, at her Grover Beach, California, home.

Her body was found Oct. 25, a day after investigators believe she was slain.

Lazar was taken into custody Nov. 6 and arrested on the murder charge after Bloomington police got a search warrant for his apartment.

Lazar had been a graduate student studying U.S. history at IU, but school spokesman Chuck Carney says he was no longer a student at IU this fall.
