Bald eagle electrocuted in Des Plaines

A bald eagle was electrocuted by power lines on River Road last week in Des Plaines, police said Monday.

The police department's animal control officer responded to the 1400 block of River Road just after 10:45 p.m. Thursday in response to a report of an injured animal. The officer discovered obvious signs of electrocution on the remains, apparently from power lines above where the eagle was found.

The officer recovered the body and contacted U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services because bald eagles are a protected species. Officials there plan to pick up the remains for transportation to the National Eagle Repository in Commerce City, Colorado, and advised Des Plaines authorities to preserve the body.
