Police: Armed robbery in Waukegan took place during private transaction

Editor's note: this story was changed to correct the name of the app. The correct name is Let-Go

One person was robbed at gunpoint Wednesday during what Waukegan police said was a private transaction that began on the internet.

Police responded to reports of an armed robbery at 3:30 p.m. in the 700 block of North Green Bay Road.

The victim told officers the pair had arranged to meet in a parking lot and complete the transaction. The two parties met over the "letgo" app.

Once the transaction began, "the buyer" pulled out a handgun and robbed the victim. The thief is described as a black man in his mid-20s, approximately 5 feet, 10 inches tall and weighing 200 pounds. The robber fled on foot.

Police are not releasing details about property taken during the armed robbery.

Waukegan Police Chief Wayne Walles said people should use their local police departments as safe exchange locations.

The Waukegan Police Department is at 101 N. West St. and is staffed 24 hours a day with a sworn officer. Residents can use the police parking lot or the front desk area at door 5. Video cameras are posted in both areas.
