Elgin man gets probation, community service for striking boy in face

An Elgin man who last August slapped a 9-year-old boy in the face and also hit a dog pleaded guilty to simple battery in exchange for two years probation.

Court records show Raul Quinonez, 28, was sentenced Tuesday to perform 10 days of community service - typically involving street, park and viaduct cleanup - as part of the Cook County Sheriff's Work Alternative Program.

In addition, Quinonez was ordered to participate in anger management counseling and pay $329 in fines. The judge also prohibited him from having unsupervised contact with minors or with companion animals, court records show.

Prosecutors say the victim told a school nurse about the incident. The nurse subsequently contacted Elgin police and the Department of Children and Family Services.
