Start new holiday tradition with Rotary Santa Run

This year, add the Rotary Santa Run to your holiday traditions. This year's race will take place at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 1. Meet at the Metropolis Lobby, 111 W. Campbell, Arlington Heights. Cost is $40; $45 after Nov. 30.

There are many reasons to make participation in the Rotary Santa Run 5K/Walk your favorite holiday tradition:

• Support the Rotary Club of Arlington Heights in helping people. Locally, the Rotary Club of Arlington Heights awards grants to Arlington Heights organizations that meet the needs of our young, elderly, disadvantaged and special needs community. Nationally, the club responded when folks in Texas, Florida and Puerto Rico needed help after hurricanes brought devastating floods. Internationally, Rotary continues to work to eradicate polio, as well as support efforts for better health care, education, clean water, and opportunity to those who need it. The funds raised by the run help them do all of this.

• Gather family, friends, and colleagues for an entire day of celebrating. Deck yourselves out in your Santa suits, or design your own unique costumes. Come up with a name for your team; no name is too silly. Join the almost 2,000 others to form a sea of Santas, enjoying an easy run (or walk) through the idyllic streets of Arlington Heights. After it's over, take your crew to one of the restaurants nearby to continue the festivities. Plan the whole day around downtown Arlington Heights.

• Get that Christmas card picture with the kids in mid stride. Don't forget, the Rotary Club of Arlington Heights also has a Reindeer Run for the 10-and-under crowd.

• Run one last time before the weather really turns. The Rotary Club knows there are those of you who continue to run outside during the winter. Take this opportunity to get one more chip-timed run in to finish out your year and set goals for next year.

• Join with your community to #MakeADifference. How often do we get the chance to gather with so many others to do something fun that does so much good?
