Learn about meat preservation at Heritage Farm

Learn how farmers cured, dried and salted meats in the 19th century at Schaumburg Park District's From Hog House to Smokehouse from noon-4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 18, at Spring Valley's Heritage Farm, 201 S. Plum Grove Road.

Visitors will see how farmers made sausage, salted hams and created other pork-related products to be eaten throughout the winter. Children's activities will be available throughout the day.

"Unlike today, where meat is bought in grocery stores, we step back in time and show how farmers 130 years ago cut and preserved their own meat in order to feed their families," said Patty Kennedy, farm program coordinator.

Admission is $3 per person and $12 per family of six or fewer. Additional family members are $3 each; free for ages 3 and younger. Refreshments and food will be available for purchase.

Parking will be available at Spring Valley Nature Center, 1111 E. Schaumburg Road. A free wagon shuttle will transport visitors to the farm.
