Suit by bicyclist hit by police vehicle will head to trial

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - A woman's lawsuit seeking damages for injuries she suffered when a police vehicle struck her during a bike ride will head to trial now that Indiana's high court has declined to hear the case.

The state Supreme Court has ruled it would not review a state Court of Appeals decision that ordered a trial to determine whether Sheila Gonzalez is entitled to damages for her injuries.

The Hobart woman was bicycling with her two children in July 2014 when she was struck by a vehicle driven by a Chesterton police detective.

Gonzalez sued the officer, the town of Chesterton and the Porter County Drug Task Force.

The (Northwest Indiana) Times reports that a Porter County judge initially dismissed her suit, but Indiana's appeals court reversed that ruling in May.
