Health officials ask families to discard youth food plates

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Families are being asked to throw away educational food plates distributed by the Indiana Women, Infants and Children program.
The (Northwest Indiana) Times reports Sunday that Indiana WIC has received two reports of the plates catching fire in microwave ovens. No injuries have been reported.
The plates are labeled safe to use in microwaves, but defective plates contain aluminum.
The Indiana State Department of Health said about 8,600 plates have been sent since June to more than three dozen Indiana WIC agencies.
The plates have sections for individual food groups. They feature colorful drawings and are designed to educate children about nutrition.
