Providing special recreation opportunities in the Fox Valley

Silent and live auctions will be among the highlights when the Fox Valley Special Recreation Foundation plays host to its seventh annual Northern Nights, Trees and Lights celebration this week in St. Charles.

The party runs from 6:30-11 p.m. Friday, Nov. 16, at the Q Center, 1405 N. 5th Ave.

The auctions will feature a variety of items packaged by volunteers. There also will be a $500 money tree raffle, beer and wine tastings, appetizers, dinner and a craft beer and wine pull.

All of the profits from Northern Nights support the Fox Valley Special Recreation Association, which, in turn, supports the opportunities provided for individuals with disabilities. Last year's celebration attracted more than 250 people.

Although tickets are no longer available to the gala, the public can bid on silent auction items at https://one.bidpal.net/northernnights2018/welcome. Bidders do not need to be present to win.

The association was formed in 1976 and is an extension of the Batavia, Fox Valley (Aurora, North Aurora, and Montgomery), Geneva, Oswegoland, St. Charles, Sugar Grove park districts, as well as the South Elgin Parks & Recreation Department.

It provides a diverse range of year-round recreational activities to enable residents with disabilities to experience active, healthy and fulfilling lifestyles.

The mission of FVSRA is to enrich the lives of people with disabilities. Working collaboratively with member agencies and community partners, its pledge is to put "people first."

Most programs are designed to include opportunities to enhance skill development and socialization, encourage self-awareness and community exploration, promote independence through personal choice of least restrictive environments, and provide a sense of enjoyment, satisfaction and fulfillment.

More than 800 programs and special events assuring and promoting choice for all individuals are offered annually. Programs include weekly fitness programs, Special Olympic sports, social clubs and dances, cooking classes, volunteer opportunities, an annual Colorado ski trip, Summer Day Camp and Inclusion support for our member agencies.

FVSRA partners with community schools to support students through their Individualized Education Plan, helping to ensure a healthy future.
