Prospect alum Pettenuzzo shines at Illinois Wesleyan
Prospect graduate Rosie Pettenuzzo had quite an end to her final regular season on the soccer field for Illinois Wesleyan.
The senior defender had her team's only goal that tied the game at 1-1.
The Titans proceeded to defeat host No. 12-ranked Wheaton College 5-4 in the shootout to earn the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin tournament and gain the league's automatic bid into the NCAA Division III tournament.
Illinois Wesleyan (13-4-2) got its only goal on its only shot on goal in the first 110 minutes when Pettenuzzo booted the ball home outside the box at 79:11 for the 1-1 tie.
It was Pettenuzzo's ninth goal of the year, trying her for the team lead.
Three days later, Pettenuzzo was named to the all-CCIW first team.
She had 3 goals against CCIW opponents during the season in which she started in all 19 games and also registered 3 assists.
To jump or not to jump?
That was the decision for Hersey senior Alessia Olhava this fall.
Would she compete at the high jump in college or play volleyball, the sport in which she helped lead Hersey to a Mid-Suburban East co-championship and regional title this fall?
She gave her answer during the first week of the state tournament, choosing the Grand Valley State women's track and field program.
"The coach saw me jump at the state meet last spring and got in contact with me," said Olhava, an all-area volleyball player this fall. "I asked about doing both sports but they had already recruited a setter."
So Olhava, who will study business, is looking forward to continuing her career in the high jump.
I like the high jump because there are more mechanics involved," she said. "You can just focus on one thing at a time rather than playing different positions.
