Lake County recorder warns of deed scam

Lake County Recorder of Deeds Mary Ellen Vanderventer is warning residents that companies contacting homeowners to provide a certified copy of the deed to their home for $87 is a scam.

Homeowners don't need to pay for this service and all requests for copies of deeds should be handled directly through the recorder's office. The average deed is four pages or less, with a copy fee of only $1 per page.
