Authorities: Deputy shot man who pulled out gun while trying to escape in Wadsworth

A Lake County sheriff's deputy shot a man who pulled out a gun when confronted by police after trying to burglarize one car and steal another Friday, authorities said.

The unidentified man in his 20s was taken to a hospital in critical condition, authorities said. The man was spotted by a resident trying to burglarize her car on the 13200 block of West Greenview Drive in Wadsworth about 4:45 a.m., authorities said. The resident called 911.

The man fled when deputies and a police dog responded to the area, authorities said. He ran about one block, where he found a vehicle warming up in a driveway and tried to take it to escape but drove it into a tree, authorities said.

While inside the vehicle, the man pulled out a pistol and a sheriff's deputy shot him, authorities said.

The gun deputies saw was recovered, authorities said.

Charges have not yet been filed. The Lake County Major Crime Task Force has been called in to conduct an independent investigation of the shooting, authorities said.
