District 214 Community Education opens winter registration, classes to start January 2

District 214 Community Education's winter registration is now open. More than 300 enrichment classes are offered to members of the community. Classes will start on Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2019 at various locations including Forest View Educational Center (FVEC), 2121 S. Goebbert Road in Arlington Heights.

To help jump-start your fitness goals and achieve a healthy mind and body in the New Year, a variety of fitness and athletics classes are offered. Students can choose from Yoga to Pickleball, Tai Chi to Pilates Barre Fusion, Pound to Circuit Training Boot Camp, Meditation to Belly Dancing, Shotokan Karate to Walk Live, and more.

To keep kids engaged and active during winter break, there are STEM camps scheduled January 2 to 4. Two are available from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. These are Engineering Olympiad Apprentice/Master (Grades 3-8) and Wings, Wheels and Sails Junior (Grades PK4 -2). Two camps are scheduled from 1 to 4 p.m. These are Lego Robotics Robo Battles Apprentice/Master (Grades 3-8) and Robotics Engineering - Adventure Stories Junior (Grades PK4-2). Engineering for Kids, a full-day camp scheduled from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., will cover all four camps mentioned and participants will be placed in grade-appropriate classes.

There are 17 free classes that are available this session.

In order to keep you moving during the cold winter months, FVEC offers an indoor walking track where participants can walk for free. Registration with Community Education is required. The indoor track is open Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.

For those interested in expressing or honing their creativity, several classes in the arts are offered this session. There are classes in creative writing, dance, music, needlework and crafts, performing arts and visual arts. New classes include poetry and a crash-course workshop on Comic Books 101.

Community Education has put together a stellar lineup of 45 culinary classes for aspiring and seasoned cooks and bakers, and for people eager to improve their cooking and baking skills. These classes include how to make sweet and savory empanadas, mini calzones, Indian breads, Mexican Chiles Rellenos, a variety of Greek home cooking classes, preparing New Orleans-style shrimp and cheesy grits, several hearty soup recipes, and more -- culinary classes that will get you through the winter months for sure. This session, the popular Knife Skills' class returns. Bakers can sign up for Bar Cookies, Cake/Cupcake Decorating, Decadent Valentine Desserts and many more.

If being a sommelier is your dream, look into several classes (you must be 21 or older) to learn about French Wines and Cheeses, Flavor & Aroma - Wine 102, Champagne & Sparkling Wines, Wine Overview - Wine 101, Wine and Chocolate and the March Wine Madness, an exciting tournament-style night of wine tasting.

Looking to improve your health and wellness? This winter, you can choose from 23 classes including courses on techniques to alleviate stress, learning the basics of essential oils, taking care of your skin in the harsh winter months and examining the Dalai Lama's Eight Pillars of Joy in the RX for Joy class.

Did you know that January is Hot Tea Month? Sign up for the Curative Properties of Tea class on January 9 and learn the medicinal properties of herbs brewed as tea.

In addition, there are hundreds of classes in finance, law and real estate, hobbies and leisure, home and garden, languages, online classes, professional development, technology, and youth, family and parent programs.
