We need a change in Congress
In response to the Herald's Oct. 7 endorsement of Peter Roskam for Congress, I write with concern.
First, the Herald cites Roskam's assistance in the passage of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act in a positive light. However, the Herald fails to acknowledge that due to changes like the limit on state and local deductions, many of Mr. Roskam's constituents - including his most affluent - may be worse off. Not to mention the beneficial cuts in rates expire for individuals, thus making the corporations of Mr. Roskam's district the only party to a permanent benefit.
Second, the Herald cites Mr. Casten's lack of experience in a negative light, but when has a lack of political experience been an immediate disqualifier? The Herald acknowledges that Mr. Casten is plugged into the issues of the district, something that Mr. Roskam fails to demonstrate in his refusal to listen to his constituents at town halls.
It's time for a change in Washington, voters in this district and across the country want representatives who will listen and fight for them. Career politicians like Mr. Roskam who secure permanent benefits for corporations while refusing to simply listen to the individuals of his district have no place in Washington.
