Elgin school evacuated after report of suspicious substance

Huff Elementary School in Elgin was briefly evacuated Thursday morning following a report of a suspicious substance coming from the basement.

The Elgin Fire Department's Hazmat unit determined the building was safe for students and staff to return.

Students and employees were out of the building for about an hour as a safety precaution, officials said.

Firefighters did not identify any odors or substances that reached classrooms or instructional spaces, Elgin Area School District U-46 spokeswoman Mary Fergus said.
