Fire defender Vincent announces retirement

The first roster move of the Chicago Fire's off-season came as a surprise.

Defender Brandon Vincent, in his third season out of Stanford, announced his retirement Tuesday from professional soccer on Twitter.

"This may come as a surprise to many, but I'm at a time in my life where it is best for me to move on from the game," Vincent wrote.

Vincent, 24, was acquired on draft day 2016 in a trade that sent Jack Harrison to New York City FC. Vincent was a regular in coach Veljko Paunovic's starting lineup, often moving from his natural left back spot to plug a hole at center back.

The Fire played its final game of the season Sunday, a scoreless draw vs. D.C. United.

Before the game veteran forward Alan Gordon, 37, announced his retirement.
