District deserves better
I am a six-year veteran of the Air Force. Among my proudest moments of a decorated career was when I deployed to Central America. Our mission was humanitarian aid. Having seen the conditions of those countries up front, I cannot help but be sympathetic to those who arrive at our border seeking the opportunity my ancestors had. These children once delighted at the sight of American uniforms, viewing us as heroes. Now they see men laughing as their parents are ripped away.
I am disappointed by your decision to endorse Peter Roskam. That is your right to do so, but I cannot help but be puzzled by your logic. You admit the dangers of our current president, but who is this Peter Roskam that you say will serve as a check on him? Who is this Peter Roskam that "was quick, forceful and unequivocal in his condemnations of the administration's policy of separating immigrant children from their parents at the Mexican border"? Where was this Peter Roskam when the policy was enacted? Where was this Peter Roskam when the secretary of Homeland Security lied to the public about this policy? Surely this cannot be the same Peter Roskam who you cite for "leadership and influence," who did nothing as children were detained. Who did nothing as children wailed for their parents and uncaring men laughed. Who did nothing. Repeatedly.
Do not insult my intelligence by telling me that Peter Roskam will be a check on our president. He has consistently failed to do so for two years. This district deserves better. We need people who will serve as a real check on this reckless president. We need Representatives that take action, not just spout empty platitudes.
We need Sean Casten. And he's earned this veteran's vote.
