Scholarship to honor of late SIU Carbondale chancellor

CARBONDALE, Ill. (AP) - A scholarship at Southern Illinois University has been established in honor of the chancellor who died this month .

The (Carbondale) Southern Illinoisan reports that the scholarship in honor of SIU Carbondale Chancellor Carlo Montemagno is now open for donations. SIU Foundation CEO Jim Salmo says he expects more than $10,000 will be donated to the scholarship and if the total exceeds $25,000, Montemagno's family will be able to endow the scholarship. That would allow SIU to invest the money in its endowment so that it can earn interest and allow the school to maintain the scholarship in perpetuity.

The Montemagno family will decide how quickly the awards will be given out, their size and criteria they'd like to see the scholarship committee use to determine who qualifies for awards.
