Special recreation association hosts volleyball tournament

Submitted by the Special Recreation Association of Central Lake County

On Oct. 7, the Special Recreation Association of Central Lake County hosted an Illinois Therapeutic Recreation Section volleyball tournament for more than 80 teens and adults with disabilities and special needs.

Six teams from the Chicago suburbs traveled to the Libertyville Sports Complex for two modified games and four traditional games. The modified games use a smaller court and bigger ball to promote the success of athletes of all abilities.

The North West Special Recreation Association's Blue Lightning team took first place in the modified division, sneaking narrowly by the Fox Valley Special Recreation Association's Stars to take home the gold medals.

SRACLC's very own Crusaders won the traditional volleyball division by defeating both the Western DuPage Special Recreation Association's Wildcats and the Northern Illinois Special Recreation Association's Nutty Netters. Andrew Kopple of Lake Zurich led the team with many saves and ace serves.

Including volleyball, SRACLC offers 13 different Special Olympics training programs throughout the year, as well as a variety of recreational programs for individuals of all ages with disabilities. Coming late this fall, SRACLC will begin training for Special Olympics snowshoeing, basketball, swimming and gymnastics.
